Match report - Valderrama (Monday the 8th and 15th of March)
As players sombrely made their way into the GOlftorium for the first meet of the 2010 corporate league, some fresh faced golfers gradually began to eye up potential competition for the following months.
Lee & Doug (TEAM BROWN SHIPLEY) were the first to appear and may possibly carry on this trend as they shot the lowest round of the night an excellent 4+ (back nine round of 40). Lee & Doug consistently complemented each other’s game with a mix of aggressive shots and great decision making. In the same group (GROUP 3) Rob & Gary (TEAM MAYTHS & SQUIRE) showed that even after a long day at work and one or two drinks nothing would evade them noticing straight away some technical difficulties on the scoring. Never the less they rallied together and showed some excellent team work and focus pulling of some sublime approach shots. The Golftorium expects to see some big things from these big hitting lawyers!
With some late injuries and team mechanic issues Jens and Darren (TEAM CFS CO-OP) flew the flag for their company. Both players showing that alcohol definitely can improve a round of golf, they both played some effortless shots and some huge drives of the tees made other teams immediately take notice. Imagine these guys playing sober!!
Simon and Alex (TEAM KPMG) arguably the favourites going into this year’s league quietly went about their business, possibly trying to evade the radar until the back end of the league. Both players showed glimpses of brilliance and could be a real threat come September! Also in group 1 Andrew & Andrew (TEAM PNB PARIBAS) ripped some frightening shots and got into their comfort zone eventually with their club of choice being the King Cobra 20˚ Baffler. The final team from group 1 Andy & Tim (TEAM MIDAS) came away with a consistent scorecard although some of the shots they played on the night were a bit ‘loose’ to be polite. However it is a long season and plenty of golf remains.
Peter and Jonathan (TEAM LEON HERMANS) played consistent golf all night. So consistent in fact that every hole regardless of it being a par 5 or par 3 was always completed in 13 shots. In the words of Arnold Palmer when talking about playing golf; “You should aim to be consistent even if you are consistently bad!”
Finally a warm welcome to Mark and Tom (TEAM MANCHESTER CITY FOOTBALL CLUB) the rookies for the 2010 season! Mark who has never played golf before tonight never once showed an ounce of intimidation and with some strong golf from team mate tom they carved their way around the Valderrama literally!.
On an ending note the Golftorium would like to thank all teams for their commitment on the first night. I personally thoroughly enjoyed the first meet and cannot wait to get deeper into the season as i am sure some top class golf is waiting for us!
